Questions & answers

Straight answers, no techno-babble.

The things people ask us most, about the systems, the kit and how we work. If yours is not here, ask us. We are happy to explain things in plain English.

General

What equipment do you use?

For intruder and fire detection we use Ajax, and we are an accredited Ajax partner. It ticked every box for us: two-way encrypted radio, photo-verified alarms, proper fire detection and the ability to work with other systems. For cameras, intercoms and access control we choose the right kit for each job rather than pushing one brand.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Lymington and work across the New Forest, including Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst, Milford on Sea, New Milton and Ringwood, as well as Christchurch, Bournemouth, Southampton and the wider Hampshire and south coast area.

Do you offer monitoring by a security company?

No. We do not provide monitored response. Your system alerts you and the people you choose straight away, with the room, the time and photos where fitted.

Can you take over a system someone else installed?

Yes, it is a big part of what we do. If your system is unreliable, unsupported or the installer has gone quiet, we can look at it and either put it right or replace it, keeping what is worth keeping.

Is wireless security actually secure?

The radio we use is encrypted, two-way and supervised. Devices check in with the control panel regularly, so a missing or blocked device is noticed within moments, not weeks, and a jamming attempt raises an alert.

How long does an installation take?

It depends on the size of the property and the system. Wireless installs are usually quick and tidy, and we will give you a realistic timeline before we start.

Do you look after systems once they are in?

Yes. We can service and maintain your system, and with your permission many things can be checked and adjusted remotely, which saves everyone a trip.

What does it cost?

Every property is different, so we price after a conversation and, where needed, a visit. Get in touch or ask for a call back and we will talk it through.

Will a wireless alarm work in an old house with thick walls?

Usually, yes. The radio we use carries a long way and we plan coverage on the survey, adding a range extender where walls are thick. Where wireless is not the right answer, we run cable instead.

Will my dog set it off?

Indoor detectors can be set to ignore pets up to a certain size, and outdoor detectors are tuned to the space they watch. We set the system up around your animals, not the other way round.

Who gets told when the alarm goes off?

You do, straight away, along with anyone else you add: family, a neighbour or a keyholder. Alerts come through the app with the room, the time and photos where fitted. We do not run a monitoring centre.

Can you take over an alarm someone else installed?

Yes. If your current system is unreliable, out of support or the installer has stopped answering, we can survey it and either put it right or replace it, keeping whatever is worth keeping.

Fire & CO for homes

Do the detectors need wiring in?

No. They are wireless and battery powered, with mains-powered versions available. That means far less mess in a finished home.

Should I have carbon monoxide detection near my log burner?

We would always recommend it. We put CO detection near anything that burns fuel, and in or near the rooms where people sleep.

Will this cover what I need for my rental or holiday let?

We will talk you through what is normally expected for your type of property and design to suit. You should always confirm your own legal obligations with your local authority, insurer or letting agent.

Commercial fire (EN 54)

More on Commercial fire (EN 54)
Is a wireless fire alarm as reliable as a wired one?

The devices are certified to the same EN 54 standards, and every one is supervised: if a device goes missing, loses signal or runs low, the panel raises a fault rather than leaving a silent gap.

Can you fit fire alarms in a listed building?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses for wireless. Far fewer cable runs means far less impact on the building’s historic fabric.

Can you service an existing fire alarm?

Tell us what you have. Depending on the system we can service it, extend it with wireless devices or plan a staged replacement.

Do I need permission to put up CCTV at home?

Not usually. But if a camera captures anything beyond your boundary, such as a road or a neighbour’s garden, data protection rules apply. We position cameras to avoid that where we can, and can point you to the ICO’s guidance for home CCTV.

Can I watch the cameras on my phone?

Yes, live and recorded, from anywhere, and on a TV or tablet at home if you like.

How long is footage kept?

It depends on how many cameras you have and how much storage we fit. We size the recorder for how far back you want to be able to look.

Intercom & access control

Can I answer the door when I am away?

Yes. The intercom rings your phone, you see and speak to whoever is there, and you can let them in if you choose.

Can you connect my existing electric gate?

Usually. Most gate motors can be brought in with the right module. We check yours on the survey.

What happens in a power cut?

We plan for it: battery backup on the parts that matter and a manual way in on every door. Nobody gets locked in or out.

Leak detection & water shut-off

More on Leak detection & water shut-off
Will it shut the water off by mistake?

Only if a detector actually gets wet. If it was a false start, such as a spilled glass, you can reopen the valve from your phone in seconds.

Does the valve need a plumber?

It goes on your incoming main, so yes, it is plumbing work. We coordinate that as part of the installation.

Can I add leak detection to my existing alarm?

If your current system is compatible, often yes. If not, leak detection and shut-off can run on their own.

Frost & temperature alerts

More on Frost & temperature alerts
Do I need a full alarm system for temperature alerts?

No. Temperature and frost alerts can be part of a wider system or a small set-up on their own.

Can it turn my heating on?

With the right heating controls or smart home integration, yes. We will tell you what is possible with your boiler and controls on the survey.

Panic buttons & personal alarms

Is this a monitored service?

No. Alerts go to the people you choose, instantly, through the app. We do not run a monitoring centre.

Can the button be worn?

Yes. Buttons can be worn on a lanyard or wristband, carried on a keyring or fixed to a wall.

Will it work in the garden?

Usually, yes. We test coverage across the house and garden when we fit it, and add a range extender if needed.

Is this the same as a carbon monoxide alarm?

No, and it is an important difference. Air quality monitors measure carbon dioxide (CO₂), humidity and temperature. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that needs a dedicated CO detector, which we fit as part of fire and life safety.

Can it control my extractor fans?

With the right connection, yes. We will look at your fans and ventilation on the survey.

Can you connect my existing alarm to my smart home?

Often, yes. Some systems integrate directly, others through relays or interface modules. We will tell you honestly what is possible once we know what you have.

Which smart home systems do you work with?

KNX, Loxone and Control4 every day, and plenty of others through relays, open protocols and integrations we write ourselves.

Do I need a smart home to benefit?

No. Even simple links, such as the alarm turning the lights on, make a big difference. We can start small and grow it.
